Wave hurtled down the mountain ridge, chasing a snow hare. The rest of his patrol followed, ready to cut off the hare from escape. The other wolves barked in excitement .The hare ran into a patch of snow and vanished.
"Hmmm , probably only a burrow," thought Wave. Then he spotted a stick falling into the snowbank. It immediately vanished with the snow hare. " Stay back," announced Wave. "The ice bridge has melted!" The wolves barked in disappointment.
The wolves immediately turned back, without any prey to eat.
Back at the wolf-region now, the hunters retired to their dens.
Leaf walked over to her brother. She could tell Wave was glum. His face looked like tears would burst out any moment. "Great news!" she said, "I am going to have pups! " Wave only grunted, for his mouth was full of snow.
As he walked to this den, he wondered if his pack would ever make it to the spring gatherings. His pack had not eaten in a week. Wave shifted around in his bedding, waiting for a dream to come to him. Suddenly, he felt the lure of sleep pull at him. He turned up at the old gathering place, the one that had been torn apart by men.
"Why am I here?" he shouted up at the sky. He floated into the air. Suddenly he ended up on the mountain ridge. He was floating high up into the air. Fire flashed at his eyes , and a huge lightning bolt hit the region.
